Merope was a pure-blood witch, daughter of Marvolo Gaunt, and a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin. She lived in a shack with her father and brother.

Merope secretly fell in love with Tom Riddle, an exceptionally handsome and wealthy Muggle, who lived nearby. With some magic being involved, Riddle became infatuated with her and they were soon married, running away to London together.

Merope Gaunt soon became pregnant and decided to release Riddle from his mental enslavement, having grown tired of living a lie. After that Riddle fled back to his family, believing to have been bewitched.

Her heart broken, Merope stopped using magic after Riddle’s desertion, not even willing to raise her wand to save her own life. On New Year’s Eve, Merope gave birth to a son and named him Tom for his father and Marvolo for her father.
