I find the Merthur friendship interesting, for Merlin was only by Arthur’s side because a great dragon told him to, and because after 4+ years Merlin is still hiding his true self from Arthur. Trust based on lies truly breeds authenticity, does it not?
At least Gwen loves Arthur for the man she sees in him, not because a magical creature told her he was meant to do great things, and she’s not hiding anything from Arthur.
Aha whoa.
Damn, I hate when people use this argument. It’s so annoying.
Rewatch the series 4 finale and tell me Merlin is doing all of this to comfort Arthur, all this to care for him and nourish his self-esteem, to be by his side when no one else is (especially post-Gwen) just because some great big slash dragon told him to. A dragon that he hated until recently, if I recall.
Merlin is hiding his secret for his life. Wouldn’t you do the same? He’s in a tough spot, as he wants to maintain his friendship with Arthur but fears that telling him would cost him that relationship. But do not tell me the Merlin/Arthur friendship is not authentic just because Merlin fears for his life and is doing what any rational human being-sorcerer person would do for self-preservation.You honestly cannot blame Merlin for keeping that particular secret from Arthur, especially after what happened to Uther due to Morgana. Does that mean that the entire Merlin/Arthur relationship is disingenuous? Absolutely not, in my book.
Jesus.
Gwen hasn’t done even half of what Merlin has done for Arthur. So yeah, I’m annoyed that Gwen who “shows up every once in a while and tells Arthur to be the king she wants him to be” (quote @ Bradley James, or something with that wording) gets to rule Camelot while Merlin still gets treated like shit.
I still don’t understand the origins for this argument. When watching this show what did you see that made you believe that Merlin is only at Arthur’s side because the Great Dragon told him to? Because, as I remember, Merlin all but laughed in the dragon’s face after he was told it was his destiny to protect Arthur. The whole point of season one (among other things) is Merlin seeing more sides to Arthur than just the prat that he met the first time. By the end of the first season he’s willing to sacrifice his life so that Arthur can live, something that he’ll do again later on. And you can’t tell me that that was for his destiny with Arthur because he’s suppose to share a destiny with Arthur. If Merlin were to die then his destiny would be left incomplete. If Merlin was really only interested in Arthur for that destiny than he would have let someone else, like Gaius, die in his place.
Merlin also has every reason to hide his magic from Arthur. And here is where the unfair comparison arrives because Gwen has nothing about her for which she could be sentenced to death. Merlin, on the other hand, does. Arthur might not be as prejudiced towards magic as his father was, but he grew up in a place where there weren’t really any pro-magic things being taught, so that has to leave his view on the subject more than a little skewed. Not to mention what Arthur’s past experience with magical people has been. Morganna changed from the girl he had known his whole life into someone filled with darkness and ambition when she discovered her magic. And Dragoon, at least through Arthur’s perspective, let his father die. Combine this with what Arthur has been taught magic users are like and he no doubt thinks that magic is a force that corrupts all those that use it. So if Merlin just walked up to him and said, “Oh, hey, I have magic!” Arthur would view him through that perspective and it would destroy their friendship.
Now I have to change tactics and look at Gwen because, I’m sorry, but saying that she doesn’t keep any secrets from Arthur is an outright lie. Did you forget about Lancelot? All throughout the episode “Lancelot and Guinevere” in season two, Gwen was prepared to set aside her feelings for Arthur to be with Lancelot. It isn’t until Lancelot takes the matter out of her hands by leaving to allow her to be with Arthur that things change. And she is visibly heartbroken when Merlin revealed to her what Lancelot had done. So you can’t tell me that Gwen isn’t keeping a big secret from Arthur because she is and that’s that she cares about Lancelot just as much as she cares for Arthur.
Ooh yay, I love debates! I guess it really depends on your view of authenticity. My definition rests in loyalty and...
I agree with you that hopefully Gwen will be helping Arthur deal with what he would perceive to be a betrayal on...
Yay! (Because it’s rare that I actually get to do this.) I feel like that was part of what was driving Merlin during...
